I received my MD from the Medical College of Pennsylvania and received my General surgery training at Tulane University. I joined Department of Surgery at University of Florida as an Assistant Professor of Surgery, then I was promoted to Associate Professor at Baylor University and then to Professor of Surgery and Vice Chair of Research at Tulane University.
For 8 years, I was the chief of General surgery at both Tulane University and the University of New Mexico. My clinical interests have always paralleled my academic/research interests. My clinical interested have mainly focused on minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgery as well as bariatric and hernia surgery. My research interests have mainly focused on cell-based therapies to treat various diseases. In collaboration with my national and international colleagues, I expanded my research to evaluate the therapeutic potential of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells as vectors to treat acute and chronic wounds. In addition, my research has explored tissue engineering in abdominal wall surgery, stem cell delivery strategies and the interaction of various extracellular tissue matrices with fat and bone marrow derived stem cells for regenerative medicine applications.
I have a record of successful and productive research projects. I successfully mentored and have been PI of several projects (including an NIH funded mentored award), collaborated with other researchers, and produced several peer-reviewed publications from each project. In fact, I have authored over 100 scientific articles and two books. I have an h-index of 19. I have been serving as the Editor-in-Chief and the editorial boards of 10 leading national and international journals.
I have supervised/co-supervised more than 15 graduate/undergraduate students and post-docs scientists. I have received numerous international awards for my research.
I am active nationally and internationally in the specialty of surgery and minimally invasive surgery. Currently, I am involved in the clinical teaching supported by evidence-based surgery and scholarly activity for the students of the University of Colorado.

-- First to describe sever early OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) after GnRH-agonist trigger and 1500 IU of hCG.
---World record egg collection: 125 eggs collected from a single patient undergoing in-vitro maturation of human oocytes without any gonadotropin stimulation and hence no risk of ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome.
---Live birth in the patient with the highest serum FSH ever to conceive a pregnancy using her own eggs (80 IU/L), never in premature ovarian failure. The FSH was twice as high as the previous record.
--First successful pregnancy and live birth obtained with serial vitrification of embryos collected through in-vitro maturation of oocytes and array-cgh and pgd in a 33-year-old patient with a strong family history of premature ovarian failure, serum FSH of 33 IU/L and fragile x permutation. The patient would not stimulate follicles with gonadotropins stimulation of 600 IU daily.
