Exclusive Interview with Prof. Zenichi Morise - Guest Editor of the Special Issue “Current and Future Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma”
Minimally invasive liver surgery (MILS) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has attracted considerable attention as an alternative to traditional open liver surgery (OLS). In response to this, the Editorial Office of Mini-invasive Surgery organized the Special Issue “Current and Future Treatment of Hepatocellular Carcinoma” which is guest-edited by Prof. Zenichi Morise, a leading expert in this field.
On 1 June 2022, the Editorial Office was honored to invite Prof. Morise to share his perspectives on minimally invasive surgery for HCC and talk about his expectations for this Special Issue. In his newly published article in 2022 and an article published in 2020, he shared the research process, the opinions on robotic surgery, the trend of minimally invasive surgery in the field, the challenges surgeons may need to overcome, and also gave some suggestions for the younger researchers. At the end, Prof. Morise concluded by stating his hopes for the Special Issue: to gather experts in the field to discuss the current status and share their cutting-edge perspectives.
Details of the interview
Zenichi Morise, Professor, Chairman and Founding Past Director of Fujita Health University Okazaki Medical Center. He is the Founding Member of International Laparoscopic Liver Society, Member of International Society of Surgery, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, American Gastroenterological Association, and International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. He published more than 100 articles with nearly 2,000 citations and nearly 7,000 views and reads. His main areas of expertise are laparoscopic hepatectomy, gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, liver surgery, and so on.
Q1 Congratulate you on the recently published article titled “An International Retrospective Observational Study of Liver Functional Deterioration after Repeat Liver Resection for Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma” in Cancers. This article was jointly produced by more than 20 experts in the field. What was the occasion that led so many excellent experts to gather and conduct such an article? Will this article bring implications to the study of minimally invasive surgery for HCC?
Q2 As we all know, you are an outstanding expert in laparoscopic hepatectomy. Your article titled “Laparoscopic repeat liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma: a multicentre propensity score-based study” published in 2020 has been cited 30 times. This is a good result in the field of minimally invasive surgery. At present, in addition to laparoscopic liver resection for the treatment of HCC, robot-assisted surgery is gradually being applied. What is your opinion or suggestion on its development?
Q3 We’ve noticed that you’ve been working on hepatocellular carcinoma for a long time. Can you share with us what motivates you to keep working on this? Do you and your team have any latest research progress on it?
Q4 As an outstanding expert in this field, what do you think are the challenges that doctors face in this field? Is there any advice you would give younger researchers in their careers?
